What is health informatics?
Health informatics is an emerging discipline, concerned with
strategies and solutions designed to
effectively manage the computers and informatin technology
required by health care professionals,
educators, students, patients, and related populations. It
addresses every facet of health informationcollection and application.
Its purpose is to improve communication, understanding, and ehance
the timely and effective application of health information to decision-making
processes in health care management, research, and clinical practice. Examples
of specific issues of concern in this field are: assessing information
needs in the health care professions; designing information clearinghouses
to serve various populations; electronic patient records; evaluating information
systems, hospital information systems and vocabulary systems; and telemedicine.
A rapidly developing and diverse field of study, specific disciplines
are beginning to emerge in the areas of nursing informatics, biomedical
informatics, and medical informatics.
